The Abraham Cowley Text and Image Archive

Cowley the proto-Romantic, after Mary Beale née Craddock (1633-1699); perhaps based on No. 659 * (attrib. Beale) in the National Portrait Gallery, London, though still closer in pose to a handsome oil portrait attrib. Peter Lely, and supposedly of Cowley at 25. As of January 2006 the same gallery's description of Faithorne's engraving remarkably describes it as "after Mary Beale," intimating that Faithorne's canonical portrait of Cowley is simply an aged version of Beale's painting.

  * This "Beale" painting is a likelier source for the frequently copied Zinck miniature of Cowley once owned by 18th-c. Horace Walpole.
